The ugly pictures that forced NDP candidate Ray Lam to quit race

| More

raylam-pic-from-facebookVancouver – NDP’s Vancouver-False Creek candidate and Vancouver city planning commissioner Ray Lam has pulled out of the race for a seat in the legislature after a picture was uncovered on his Facebook page showing his hand on a woman’s breast.

Another picture is even uglier – showing people putting their fingers in his underwear.

He acknowledged Sunday that the pictures were a distraction to his campaign and an embarrassment to his leader Carole James.

“An issue was made regarding inappropriate material on my private Facebook page,” said Lam in a press release issued by the NDP. “I regret this material and the associated comments that have now become public.”

“I do not want this to be a distraction in the election campaign and have advised the party that I am stepping down,” he said.

He also offered his apology to to residents of False Creek, to the NDP and to James.

The woman in the picture was not identified.

Facebook is a popular social media portal where millions post pictures and send messages to their friends “walls.”

Lam is also a planning commissioner with the city of Vancouver. It is unknown if he’ll quit the position.

In addition, Ray participated in the creation of a youth drug-action program in Richmond, and Coquitlam’s response to the methamphetamine crisis. He has served as a Director in the BC/Yukon constituency for Egale Canada and the Egale Human Rights Trust.

His work mobilizing every-day citizens has resulted in a community garden, gathering place, library, and a neighborhood action committee in East Richmond over his four years on the board of the Community Association.

Ray currently sits on the board of Vancouver InterPride, Vancouver Pride, and PFLAG Canada (as Vice-President), and works as a provincial coordinator for the goBEYOND project, a campaign targeted at moving youth beyond climate neutral.

Ray created a web 2.0 response to this whole thing because of all the media spin and misinformation around his resignation.

His statement on the home page is…unbelievably tame, and he writes about the whole incident in a blog, which is actually pretty interesting.
