Vancouver, B.C. – A Vancouver Island man has been arrested and faces charges in relation to the beating death of his 86-year-old father.

Police were called to a home on Acacia Street in Parksville on May 11. They said they found the old man in poor condition after being seriously assaulted.

“An 86 year old male had been seriously assaulted in his home. The suspect was the victim’s son,” RCMP said.

“The suspect left the residence on foot, was located by officers of the Oceanside RCMP and arrested without incident,” said a police spokesman.

“The victim, Kenneth John Rode, received serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to hospital where he later succumbed to these injuries.

The victim’s 44-year-old son, Douglas Arne Rode, made a first appearance in Nanaimo Provincial Court on May 12, charged with aggravated assault, and will be held in custody until his next appearance in Nanaimo Provincial Court on May 19.

Crown Counsel is currently reviewing the file with the possibility of upgrading the charge to second degree murder, RCMP said.
