Cops probing Surrey strip club murder face more mysteries
Cops probing a night-time shooting inside a strip club in Surrey have a puzzle to solve.
And they also want to know if a car involved in a hit-and-run shortly after the strip joint murder was a getaway vehicle.
RCMP face a mystery in that two men unknown to each other ended up being shot.
One was hit fatally. Another is in critical condition in hospital.
RCMP said a man wearing a dark hood exited the strip lounge moments after shots were fired at around 11 p.m. on Saturday night. The Legacy Show Lounge is located inside the premises of the Clover Inn.
Two men were sprawled on the floor and being attended to by paramedics when the cops arrived.
“Once at hospital one male, a 34-year-old Surrey man, passed away due to injuries sustained in the shooting. The other male a 28-year-old Surrey man remains in hospital in critical but stable condition,” said police spokesman Cpl. Dale Carr.
“Police have established that the two males were not known to each other,” he said.
What that means is the cops have no idea whether the shooter intended to kill the 34-year-old or the 28-year-old. Cops theorize one of the two was not the intended target.
“We are attempting to establish whether we have one person that was the intended target of the shooting and the other being a bystander, we have a great deal of work to go to make that conclusion however”, said Carr, a spokesman for IHIT.
On Monday, police identified the dead man but said they still cannot link the shooting to gangs or drugs.
“The deceased victim in yesterday’s tragic homicide has been identified as 34-year-old Christopher Roy Whitmee of Surrey. The surviving victim remains in hospital in critical but stable condition,” police said.
Police are also looking for a car that was involved in a hit-and-run shortly after the strip lounge shooting.
“Investigators have discovered that minutes after the shooting at the Legacy Show Lounge a hit and run collision took place at the nearby intersection of Highway 10 and 176 Street in Cloverdale,” said a police statement.
“The victim vehicle was completing a left turn from Highway 10 to travel north on 176 Street when a vehicle travelling west on Highway 10 clipped the rear of the victim vehicle. The suspect vehicle continued west on Highway 10 without stopping. There were no injuries sustained by the victims in the hit and run incident.
The vehicle police are looking for is a small dark-coloured 2-door car. Cops want to eliminate the possibility it was a getaway vehicle.
“Investigators have not yet determined whether this incident is linked to drugs or gangs or organized crime, however, the shooting has indicators of being a targeted shooting. Investigators are attempting to establish which of the two males or if both males were the intended target,” he said.
Many patrons at the club left shortly after, mainly out of fear. Cops want them to come forward and help with the fatal shooting. Police said later some have come forward to offer their help.
Police are also looking for more information about the hooded gunman.
“A man was seen fleeing the Show Lounge immediately after the shooting. The man was thought to be in his early twenties, wearing dark clothing including a dark hooded jacket. The man was last seen leaving the club through the rear door into the alley heading north east through the alley,” Carr said.
