Distraught cops needed help dealing with death of girl, 15

SURREY, B.C. – It was an accident so tragic that even hardened cops were overcome with emotion and needed help to fight their pain at what they had witnessed.

Police say a 15-year-old walking along a sidewalk stumbled on to the road on 104th Ave and was run over by a semi-trailer truck Monday night.

“At 8:45 p.m on Monday, June 1st, a semi-truck was travelling westbound on 104th Avenue in the right hand lane when a fifteen year old female stumbled into traffic and was subsequently struck down by the vehicle,” RCMP sgt. Roger Morrow said.

Emergency vehicles arrived quickly at the scene but there was little they could do for the girl, he said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Victim services officials were helping the girl’s family with the tragedy.

Morrow said two officers who were at the scene also needed support.

“Further, two of the police personnel attending this incident were distraught and are being assisted in this regard,” he said.

Morrow said RCMP are currently conducting an in-depth investigation. Witnesses were being interviewed as well as a second truck driver who was right behind the one that ran over the girl.

As part of this investigation, the vehicle involved will be given a commercial motor vehicle inspection. While in the initial stages of the investigation, speed of the semi-truck is not believed to be a factor, he said.

Police expected the intersection around 141 Street and 104th Avenue to be closed until early Tuesday.
