Heavily armed cops took a 28-year-old man into custody over the weekend in connection with the May shooting death of Maple Ridge resident Sarabjit ‘Steve’ Nagra.

Nagra drove to Maple Ridge hospital in his own SUV on May 28 after being shot, but collapsed upon arrival. He died shortly after  being transferred to another hospital.

Hershan Singh BAINS (Shawn Bains) of Maple Ridge was arrested by the Emergency Response Team and IHIT officers on Friday evening. He has been charged with second degree murder.

“BAINS is known to police, he is known specifically for his continued association with organized crime figures,” said Cpl. Dale Carr of IHIT.

Nagra, who was also known to Maple Ridge RCMP, was shot outside a home in the 11400-block of Maple Crescent.

He drove his SUV to Maple Ridge hospital while bleeding heavily from the gun shot wound and then collapsed when he arrived.

He was later taken to Royal Columbian Hospital where he died.

“Police feel that the attack was targeted attack toward the victim. It would appear from the evidence gathered so far in the investigation that no other person other than the victim was at risk from the gunfire,” Carr said at the time. It is not clear why a charge of second degree murder would be laid in a targeted shooting.
