Jay Phillips is a black man. On July 3 he was attacked by three white racists in Courtenay, B.C. on Vancouver Island.
A shocking video taped by a person standing in a balcony of an apartment shows three men punching Phillips and shouting racial slurs.
Police have now arrested three white males over the vicious racist attack on the young black man in Courtenay, which is on Vancouver Island.
Police said the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Hate Crimes section is studying the evidence.
All three males (ages 19, 24, and 25) in regards to this incident have been arrested and are facing assault charges,” said Const. Tammy Douglas.
“One male had been dealt with previously and the other two attended the detachment Wednesday to deal with this matter,” police said.
“There are elements or indicators that the offence was racially motivated, however, this determination is made when all the evidence is collected and we are still in the process of gathering evidence.
Our General Investigation Section has been liaising with the B.C. Hate Crime Team in regards to this incident.
The attack occurred last Friday, July 3. It was in daylight and people were viewing the attack but police presence is not seen in the video.

I am from vancouver and i wanted to say that the canadian gov. promotes racism here in canada.There is a lot of racial profiling going on and immigrants been arrested with the security certificates law.In the usa the same thing is going on with immigrants been arrested at their workplace.It is good to see that the black man stood up to these racists.In the end the working class will have to take to the streets to fight against racism.The canadian gov. is part of the problem.
That is absolutely DISGUSTING. We aren’t living in the 1950s anymore…what’s most appalling to me is how this occurred in Western CANADA. The country which is known for celebrating diversity and its vast array of cultures and religions. This was heart-wrenching to watch.
Racist crime should be punished more heavily. How are supposed to overcome racial profiling (mentioned by the above commenter) if stricter punitive measures aren’t taken?
How can these three white men be released…what is wrong with this justice system. What about the other two white guys….they drove the truck…call out hate names also…if this was an animal being attacked, kicked and beaten…the guys would be locked up….the judge had better give these guys the maximum ….Canada will be watching….Mr Justice. This was very traumatic to watch and my heart goes out to the victim.

From wherever you are Western Canada is not famous for encouraging diversity. Take the instances of deporting of Indians and shipping of Japanese like animals to Eastern Canada during wartime. Not at all encouraging diversity very sad. Even after the proof of the video where they can be heard racial slurs the police say that there may be an element of racism which is ridiculous. Please take action against the three individuals without any bias they even let out their dog attack the poor guy. After having a white mother if this is the case for black skinned individual in this country imagine what it will be for others. Racism is subtle in Canada. God bless the guy who was attacked.
While these a-holes should be lynched, let’s not stupidly overreact. Racism is a fact of life EVERYWHERE and will NEVER go away. It can only be pushed below the surface. Only a stupid person will generalize about racism in the entire country just because of this one case. If you want to see racism go to Asia.
Why are these attackers NOT named? They have been charged and there is no question about what they did.
The justice system in Canada is a joke. You have teens murderers free just because they are underage. Pedophiles in jail for only 6 months. Justice in Canada means going to court for years and victims are left with nothing. Racism occurs all the time. Not only citizens but also cops. This is publicized only because it’s caught on tape.
