Three dead in separate accidents on Highway 1 east of Vancouver
Three separate accidents on Highway 1 have killed a total of three people including two women in their 50s and a 65-year-old man who died after his motorbike slammed into a stopped vehicle.
The three accidents disrupted traffic throughout the day Saturday.
The first fatality of the day happened at around 12:35 p.m. when a motorcyclist struck a vehicle that had stopped ahead of him in the left lane of the highway.
The accident, on Highway 1 half way down Johnston Hill near Port Mann bridge resulted in the bike rider being ejected on to the right hand lane.
Police said the 65-year-old was then struck by a tractor trailer unit that was traveling in the right lane.
“The British Columbia Ambulance Service and Local Fire Departments attended the scene and attempted to revive the motorcyclist, however, the motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries at the scene,” said police.
The victim was from Langley, police said, but they have not identified him yet pending notification of next of kin.
TA second collision happened between two cars near Chilliwack on Highway between the Lickman Road overpass and Vedder Road.
RCMP said a grey 2005 Honda Element and a grey 2007 Mazda 3 were traveling in opposite directions when the collission occurred. The crash killed two women from the Greater Vancouver area. One of the victims was 55 while the other was 54.
Police said a 26-year-old was flown to a hospital and later released.
No details were available from police about how the accident happened or whether the two women who were killed were in the same car.
The crash occurred at 2:17 p.m. on Saturday and forced RCMP to close the east-bound portion of the highway. The east-bound lanes were reopened late Saturday.
While the Mounties were working on the accident a three-vehicle crash occurred just east of the Lickman Road overpass on Highway 1. RCMP said a Ford Econovan slammed into the back of a vehicle pushing it into another vehicle. The accident disrupted traffic but there were no serious injuries.
