A 46-year-old man shot by RCMP in Surrey on Tuesday evening has died. Police said he had rammed a police car when a cop shot him to “gain control” over him.

Kenneth Keith Baines died in hospital on Wednesday afternoon. He was from Surrey.

Police were conducting surveillance on a Surrey warehouse at 12600-block of 80th Avenue at around 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday when a man rammed a police car while cops were trying to catch him.

“At approximately 7:40 p.m, the officers observed a stolen vehicle enter the complex. The vehicle was a 1992 Honda Accord, brown in color, reported stolen July 14, 2009 at 12:00 p.m., RCMP spokesman Sgt. Peter Thiessen said.

“The officers attempted to contain the stolen vehicle and affect the arrest of the lone occupant,” he said. “The suspect attempted to flee by ramming the stolen vehicle into the police vehicle.”

“One of the responding police officers discharged his sidearm striking the suspect in the upper body, specifically the head and neck area. This allowed the officer to gain control of the suspect; he was subsequently transported to a local area hospital by the BC Ambulance Service,” Thiessen explained.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is the lead investigative unit. In addition to homicides, IHIT is mandated to conduct investigations into police involved shootings. The investigative team deployed to this incident includes members from the Abbotsford Police Department.
