A summer student at Moscrop Secondary School in Burnaby has come down with Swine Flu even as the federal government announced a total of 55 fatalities from the novel virus across Canada.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control reported Friday 302 Americans have now died. The U.S. 43,771 lab confirmed cases. New York leads with 63 deaths and California has 52. The U.K said it had 100,000 cases in one week and reports 29 deaths.

The Moscrop summer studentĀ  is one of severalĀ  kids who have caught Swine Flu while at school in B.C. but the seriousness of the student’s illness is not clear. Neither Moscrop nor the ministry of educations has commented.

Two people have died in B.C. so far from Swine Flu and 20 have been hospitalized because of serious illness. Out of those 20, 10 had to be placed in intensive care. Among those who have died in B.C. is a seven-year-old child.

Moscrop has not announced whether the summer school program will be interrupted because of the case, but authorities have generally declined to shut down schools unless more are taken ill.

B.C. has so far reported 434 lab confirmed cases, far fewer than provinces with smaller populations. Part of the reason for that is the fact that B.C. dropped routine diagnostic testing much earlier than others while provinces like Quebec checked everyone out with any flu like illness.

Canada has reported six additional deaths between July 21 and July 23. 19 people have so far died in Quebec while 18 are reported dead in Ontario.
