Canadian Julie Payette back on earth after second space flight
Canadian astronaut Julie Payette has completed her second space flight aboard space shuttle Endeavour.
Payette and six fellow astronauts left behind in orbit a new porch for the International Space Station, two pairs of small research satellites, and a new space station resident.
Endeavour landed at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center on Friday at 7:49 a.m Pacific Time.
The shuttle brought home Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut
Koichi Wakata, who spent 138 days in space and was a member of three station expedition crews. NASA astronaut Tim Kopra launched aboard Endeavour remained on the station as a resident.
Payette and crew members constructed a porch for the International Space Station. It will be used as a pad for space experiments.
Payette, 46, became the first Canadian to board the space station durng a 9-day space flight between May 27 to June 6, 1999. During that trip, she travelled six million kilometres in space.
The STS-127 mission crew members were Commander Mark Polansky, Pilot Doug Hurley and Mission Specialists Dave Wolf, Christopher Cassidy, Tom Marshburn, Tim Kopra and Payette.
