MIAMI – (Update2) Hurricane Bill has grown in strength with sustained winds of 105 MPH and higher speed gusts.

An Airforce Reserve Hunter aircraft will examine the hurricane Tuesday afternoon.

The U.S. National Weather Service said Bill is likely to become a massive storm in a day or two.

Bill is located approximately 705 miles east of Leeward Islands. It is still tracking north-northwest.  Hurricane force winds are spreading up to 40 miles from the eye of the storm. Tropical storm force winds are spreading 175 miles from the centre.

By Monday morning it was packing sustained winds of 90 MPH and projecting hurricane force winds outward for 30 miles.

“The centre of Hurricane Bill is located at latitude 14.1 North and longitude 45.2 West. It is 1080 miles East of The Lesser Antilles,” the national weather service said.

Bill is moving west-northwest at 16 miles per hour and this track is expected to continue for the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained winds increased from the first advisory to a new advisory issued Monday morning and sustained winds are now 90 MPH or 150 KPH. Sustained winds were at 75 MPH when it was upgraded from a tropical storm.
Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 30 miles, 45 kilometres, from the centre of the storm. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 145 miles, 230 kilometres.

Bill is the first hurricane of  the 2009 Atlantic season.

The National Weather Service says Bill will become a major hurricane by Wednesday.

The National Weather Service upgraded Tropical Storm Bill to the first hurricane of the 2009 season early Monday morning as it moved west-northwest 1160 miles east of the Lesser Antilles.

  1. Seem to be a little behind on this one. Hurricane Bill has died out days ago and is now replaced by Erika.

    • We Don’t know why people are still coming to the Hurricane Bill story. We are wondering why. Notice when that story was filed. No updates were issued. It may be a glitch with Google News indexing the story incorrectly.
