RICHMOND, B.C. – Urinating in a crocodile infested lagoon in Mexico has left a 20-year-old B.C. man with bite marks – to his legs.

According to Richmond cops, the man telephoned his family and told a  story suggesting he had been kidnapped, forced to fight, got shot in the shoulder and then was dumped in water where he was attacked by crocodiles.

“The mom became quite frantic and sought the help of authorities here,” said Cpl. Jennifer Pound. “The story then got into the media somehow but we did not put it out there.”

However, police made some inquiries about the alleged kidnapping and shooting with Mexican authorities. And the truth, according to Mexican cops, was entirely different.

Mexican authorities said the man was urinating in a lagoon in Cancun where signs clearly state that the water has crocodiles.

“In speaking with Mexican authorities it has been determined, according to their reports, that this male was attempting to use the lagoon as a urinal,” said Pound, Richmond RCMP spokeswoman.

“The lagoon is clearly marked with signs in English and Spanish warning the public about the crocodile infested waters,” she said.

“It appears that the male received bite marks to his leg which possibly led him to fall on the rocks in the water and receive further injury from the fall and further crocodile bites,” she said.

“The species of crocodiles that would be in this said lagoon are reported to be no more than 25-30 cm. Although they were small they would still be able to cause an extensive amount of injury to flesh, but would not be able to drag one underneath the water,” she added.

The male was taken to hospital where he received basic first aid for his injuries and refused further treatment.

Pound said: “The details of this story were troubling from the beginning. It was absolutely necessary to get to the bottom of it in order to advise the public of a more truthful depiction of events. These kinds of false accusations can be detrimental to a Country such as Mexico, that thrive on tourism. If tourists are too scared to travel because of false information, than we are doing that Country a disservice if we don’t seek clarification.”
