VANCOUVER – A Mountie involved in protecting VIPs faces impaired driving charges after smashing his car into the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge.

Sgt. Tim Shields said the officer was off-duty at 4:22 a.m. on Sunday when he crashed his vehicle at the south end of the bridge.

“ The driver of the involved vehicle apparently lost control and collided with a barrier, heavily damaging the vehicle. Two civilian passengers sustained minor injuries,” Shields said.

“As part of the investigation, Vancouver Police obtained breath samples from the driver, which were determined to be over the legal limit of 0.08,” he announced.

The cop received a 24 hour suspension, a 90-day driving prohibition and will be appearing in court November 20, 2009 to face charges of impaired driving.

“The driver is a Constable of the RCMP working in General Duty Protective Policing based out of Vancouver Headquarters,” said Shields.

“He was off duty at the time of the crash and was driving a personal vehicle.  He has been re-assigned to administrative duties pending the outcome of an RCMP code of conduct investigation,” said Shields.

Shields said the officer’s name will be released when charges are approved by crown counsel.
