RCMP thank citizens for saving officer’s life
NEW HAZELTON, B.C. – A police officer owes his life to citizens who intervened while he was being attacked by three people who were grabbing for his gun.
RCMP said a “graver outcome” could have resulted had citizens not intervened to assist the officer who found himself in serious trouble while checking an impaired driver.
“The New Hazelton RCMP would like to sincerely thank those bystanders who took action and stepped in to assist and protect the officer from serious or grievous bodily injury during this alleged assault. It is by their actions that a far graver outcome may have unfolded had they not intervened and assisted”, stated Sgt Hector Lee
The incident began at around 2:40 p.m. on Oct. 24 when a cop stopped a car at the corner of Kispiox Valley Road and Highway 16.
“The officer was dealing with the occupants of the vehicle and arrested one of the passengers for obstructing the officer,” said Lee.
“This individual was placed in the back of a police vehicle. The officer then continued his investigation in regards to the driver’s ability to drive a motor vehicle being possibly impaired by alcohol and attempted to arrest him. It is aleged that the driver then assaulted the officer and a struggle ensued where the officer was struck multiple times,” said Lee.
“The officer and driver fell to the ground when the remaining two female passengers who had been in the vehicle became involved,” he said. “It is alleged that the officer was then kicked multiple times and attempts to disarm the officer were made by one of the females grabbing at his holstered sidearm.”
“Nearby bystanders stepped in and protected the officer from receiving further blows,” he said.
“A second police unit arrived with this second officer who was also allegedly assaulted by one of the female passengers,” Lee said.
Two adult males and one adult female were taken into custody. The fourth female who is a young person was released to a relative.
One of the officers suffered minor injuries and continues to be on full duty.
Charges of impaired driving, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, attempting to disarm a police officer, uttering death threats, escaping lawful custody are being considered.
