OTTAWA – 38 more Canadians have died in five days to take Canada’s death toll from Swine Flu to 200, with Quebec reporting a surge of fatalities.

The Public Health Agency of Canada, PHAC, said 23 people died in Quebec in a wave of deadly Swine Flu illness in the reporting period from Nov. 12 to Nov. 17.

B.C. has reported seven more deaths to take the provincial total to 30.

PHAC counted 198 deaths across Canada since the start of the pandemic. But the figures are two short of actual numbers and perhaps more since some juridictions issue delayed reporting. For example, B.C. on Tuesday reported two deaths that it had not declared last week.

While PHAC is reporting 29 deaths in B.C., the actual figure is 30.

In total, according to PHAC, 38 Canadians died between Nov. 12 and 11 a.m. EST on Nov. 17.

In a similar surge, Ontario reported that in a 72-hour period between Nov. 10 to Nov. 12, it had 24 deaths. The federal report for the five-day period does not list deaths in Ontario but dozens upon dozens have been hospitalized.

B.C. has reported seven deaths, Saskatchewan reported three more, Nova Scotia reported a single death while Newfoundland and Labrador reported two deaths during the five-day period covered by the latest PHAC report.

Most of the Canadian deaths have occurred during the second, more serious Swine Flu wave that has swept the country’s populated areas since October.
