abby policeABBOTSFORD, B.C. – Police have secured the scene and plan to conduct a detailed examination before moving the body of a man found face up in a dirty, water-filled ditch on the side of Sumas Way.

Const. Ian MacDonald said the body was reported to police at 12:10 p.m. by a passerby.

“A witness indicated that a person was in a water-filled ditch and that the individual appeared to be deceased. Members of our Patrol Division arrived on scene and have verified these facts,” said MacDonald.

“One side of the road is is rural agricultural but the side of the road where this individual was found is predominantly built up with retail and industrial,” said MacDonald, who adds police will have to work for several hours even before the body is moved since the man’s death could have been caused by multiple unknown factors ranging from pedestrian accident to homicide.

“Until we get the body out we won’t know if there is anything out of the ordinary – the ditch is muddy, it’s dirty and you can barely see him above the surface level,” he said. “There is water and mud – he’s face up.”

“We are fairly certain it is a man – but we don’t know how he died, and we’ll not know until we extricate the body,” MacDonald added.

Police are looking at any tire marks in the area and will examine the surrounding area of the ditch for several hours, he said.

Police have a report of a missing man that was recently submitted but MacDonald said it would be conjecture at this point to think that the missing person is the dead man in the ditch.
