Man shot by B.C. cop is expected to recover
SMITHERS, B.C. - A suspected car thief shot by police is in stable condition and is expected to recover.
A policeman fired at the suspect after a stolen truck was stopped. RCMP said the cop fired when he was dragged by the vehicle as he was removing the suspect from the vehicle.
“On November 21, 2009 at 11:51 AM, Houston RCMP received information from the public regarding a stolen truck,” said Const. Craig Douglas. The information was passed on to Smithers RCMP.
“Smithers RCMP Detachment spotted and intercepted a vehicle matching the description of the stolen truck on Highway 16 near Tatlow Road in Smithers,” he said.
“The vehicle was stopped by the officer. Two back-up police officers arrived within seconds. While attempting to remove the driver of the truck, the vehicle accelerated dragging the officer,” said Douglas.
“The officer discharged his firearm and the driver was struck,” he said.
“The 24-year-old male driver was immediately transported to hospital,” he said.
The shooting victim was transported to a Vancouver hospital.
Police did not provide details of where the man was shot nor the extent of his injuries. They did not say how many times the policeman fired at him.
A senior officer from another police department has been called in to investigate the shooting and the Commission of Public Complaints against the RCMP is monitoring the investigation.
“Information this morning is that he is fine and will recover,” said Douglas.
