Swine Flu deaths mount in B.C., 443 hospitalized in November

VICTORIA – B.C.’s Swine Flu toll continues to mount with 109 more severe cases admitted to hospital and four more deaths, according to the weekly government bulletin issued at noon Tuesday.
443 people have been admitted to hospitals in B.C. in so far in November, straining several hospitals which are working at or over capacity. A total of 17 B.C. residents have died since Nov. 3.
With four more deaths reported this week, the death toll in B.C. reached 34. The majority of the fatalities have occurred since mid-October when the second wave of the pandemic flu escalated.
“Since Nov. 17, there have been 109 new severe cases of H1N1 identified in B.C. – 33 in Fraser Health, 27 in Vancouver Coastal Health, 25 in Interior Health, 19 on Vancouver Island and five in Northern Health – with four new deaths, including one in Interior Health, one in Vancouver Coastal Health, one in Northern Health and one on Vancouver Island,” said the latest report from the ministry of health.
“To date, 34 laboratory-confirmed H1N1 cases in B.C. are reported to have died. Of those, 29 cases had underlying medical conditions while four had no underlying conditions. One case is still under investigation,” the government said.
For the period ending Nov. 17, the B.C. government had reported five deaths and 141 hospitalizations.
Until Nov. 17, 755 had been hospitalized. The hospitalization figure has jumped to 863 since then.
Eight people died between Nov. 3 and Nov. 10 and 202 were hospitalized.
