Kamloops man dies 13 hours after being in police cells
KAMLOOPS, B.C. – RCMP and the coroner are investigating why a 39-year-old man died within 13 hours of being released from police custody.
The body of John Paul Gibbons was found in a park at Stuart Woods School at 7:30 a.m on Saturday, Nov. 21.
Gibbons had been arrested by Kamloops RCMP the day previous, on November 20, 2009 at about 9:50 a.m. for causing a disturbance and being intoxicated in a public place,” said an RCMP statement.
“Gibbons was held until sober and released later the same day at 6:45 p.m. His body was found the next morning by a passerby in the park,” the following morning, just over 13 hours after being released.
“Given that Gibbons had been in police custody the day previous, the investigation into his death will also include the period when he was held in the Kamloops Detachment cells,” said Const. Cheryl Bush.
“Investigators will look at everything including the arrest, time in custody, and his activities after being released, up to the time his body was found the next day,” she said.
RCMP are asking anyone who had contact with the man to call them.
Police said foul play is not suspected but authorities have to make sure nothing happened to him while he was in police custody.
An autopsy has been completed and results are awaited.
