51 killed by Swine Flu in B.C. so far, 1,032 hospitalized
VICTORIA – B.C.’s death toll from Swine Flu has reached 51 with four new fatalities and 23 hospitalizations added to the list since Dec. 8, according to a ministry of health report released Tuesday.
Two of the deaths occurred during the period Dec. 8 to Dec. 15 while two deaths which occurred during the previous reporting week were not reported at that time and included in Tuesday’s statement.
So far 1,032 people have been hospitalized in B.C. from severe flu symptoms since the pandemic virus was first observed in April. However, an overwhelming number of the hospitalizations occurred in the second wave of the pH1N1 pandemic starting in October.
Authorities say all indicators suggest the second wave of the flu has crested but low level deaths and illness are expected to continue. People are being urged to continue to get vaccinated to prevent a third wave from causing more fatalities.
Swine Flu has resulted in the following hospitalizations and deaths by health authority regions:
o 358 in Fraser Health, including 17 deaths.
o 233 in Interior Health, including 13 deaths.
o 44 in Northern Health, including two deaths.
o 258 in Vancouver Coastal Health, including nine deaths.
o 139 on Vancouver Island, including 10 deaths.
