Elderly Chilliwack couple rescued from upside down car in ditch
CHILLIWACK, B.C. – An elderly couple trapped inside their upside down car inside a water-filled ditch were rescued by fire department officials following the accident on Chilliwack Mountain Road near Lickman.
“The vehicle had left the roadway going off road left into a ditch and had flipped before coming to a rest,” said Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop.
“The occupants of the vehicle, a male age 84 and a female age 82 of Chilliwack, were trapped upside down in the vehicle which was partially submerged in water,” she said.
“A witness reported the vehicle after having spotted it while driving by but was unsure if anyone was inside. A number of people stopped at the scene and could hear people inside the vehicle,” she said.
A policeman who arrived at the scene waded into the water and talked to the couple telling them that help was on the way, she said.
“Fire crews arrived a short time later and were able to extract the couple from the vehicle,” police said.
“Both occupants received minor injuries and were taken to hospital to be checked for hypothermia due to the unknown amount of time they were partially submerged in water,” Said Dunlop.
They are expected to be fine.
Police said driver fatigue may have been a factor and no charges are expected.
