Residents allowed to return home after bomb scare ends

VANCOUVER – (Update) Several residents evacuated from a Vancouver neighborhood over fears that a home had received a parcel bomb have been allowed to return.
Police now say it was a real bomb. See latest
Police concluded the investigation eight hours after it began. A 911 call reporting a suspicious package came from a home in the 2000-bock of East 45th Avenue.
Police called in their emergency response team members to deal with the situation after the package was discovered on Monday afternoon.
Vancouver Police spokeswoman Const. Jana McGuinness said police were taking every precaution to make sure of the contents before allowing anyone into the secure area.
Police moved the package from an upper floor area of the home after two controlled detonations.
“Two controlled detonations were initiated by a VPD Explosives Technician to ensure the package was safe for handling after it was removed from the upper floor of the home,” said Const. Jana McGuinness.
”The investigation has been turned over to the VPD Arson Squad to determine the contents of the package and conduct interviews with residents of the home,” she said.
Traffic is moving through the area again and folks who had to leave their homes for nearly eight hours have been allowed to return.
Police have not said if any explosive substances were in the package, or why the residents of the home were suspicious.
