Hunt for suspect in sex assault on nine-year-old

VANCOUVER - (Update) Vancouver police have notified the school board and liaison officers to make sure parents are made aware of the sexual assault on a nine-year-old girl at a park near Arbutus Mall.
Police said they are continuing their investigation of the attack on the child who was lured while she was seated on a bench outside the Arbutus Square Mall at Arbutus Street and West 32nd Avenue on Monday evening. She was enticed to follow a teenaged suspect to a nearby park where she was attacked.
“Vancouver Police are actively working on the sexual assault investigation of a nine-year-old girl that occurred on the evening of January 4th.,” said Vancouver Police spokeswoman Const. Jana McGuinness.
”Investigators are taking the precaution of notifying Vancouver Police School Liaison Officers and the Vancouver School Board of the incident to ensure information is shared with parents of school-aged children in the area. At this time, there is no connection between the incident and any students,” she said in an update issued on Thursday.
”The girl was approached by a young man while she sat on a bench near the entrance to the Arbutus Square Mall at Arbutus Street and W. 32nd Avenue,” McGuinness said earlier.
“ He convinced her to follow him to a nearby park where he sexually assaulted and threatened her,” McGuinness said.
The child then fled, making her way back to the mall to seek help.
Police have compiled a composite drawing of the suspect from the girl’s description.
The suspect is described as being in his early teens, of average build, 5’1” to 5’5” tall, with short blonde hair. He was wearing jeans, a black coat, and high-top runners with either black and purple or black andgreen markings. He was carrying a black backpack with a Nike swoosh.
