Also in Afghanistan, troops discovered one ton of opium hidden in a vehicle in Helmand province. Two people were taken into custody and troops destroyed the drugs.
Three U.S. troops were killed in an exchange of fire with insurgents in southern Afghanistan on Monday, ISAF said without providing additional details.
Two more soldiers from another country were killed in an engagement in eastern Afghanistan on Monday. The country of origin of the two was not revealed.
A roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan killed another NATO soldier but ISAF did not provide details nor the national identity of the soldier killed.
2009 was the deadliest year for NATO troops since the engagement in Afghanistan began following the 9/11 attacks on the U.S.
The level of casualties being extracted by the insurgents in 2010 does not appear diminished.
