Arson suspected in Abbotsford townhouse fires

Const. Ian MacDonald - arson suspected.

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Police think an arsonist likely started two fires that damaged five townhouses, several cars and a carport in another townhouse complex nearby.

“The Abbotsford Police Department’s Patrol Division attended two suspicious fires at neighbouring townhouse complexes in the area of the 32300 block of Mouat Drive and the 3000 block of Trethewey Street early this morning,” said Const. Ian MacDonald.

MacDonald said a massive blaze swept through a complex on Mouat Drive at 1:45 a.m. on Wednesday.

Five town homes were damaged along with several vehicles, he said. Luckily, no one was injured.

“ Minutes after this fire was reported, a smaller fire was located in a carport at an adjacent townhouse complex on Trethewey Street.  That fire was quickly extinguished with only minor damage being incurred. Again it was fortunate that there were no injuries,” he said.

“Both fires are being actively investigated by the Abbotsford Police Department’s Major Crime Unit with the assistance of the Forensic Identification Unit and the Patrol Division,” said MacDonald.

Police are asking anyone who has any information that might help in the investigation to call them at 604-859-5225.
