Woman pedestrian, 78, dies from injuries
NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. – Initial police hopes that a 78-year-old woman would survive major trauma she suffered after being struck by a vehicle were dashed despite the best efforts of doctors at the Royal Columbian Hospital on Monday.
“Initial reports were hopeful of the victims health improving, however, sadly, later in the evening, the victim succumbed to her injuries,” said Sgt. Gary Weishaar.
The elderly woman was struck by a vehicle in the crosswalk at 20th Street and Eight Avenue on at about 1:56 p.m.
“The injuries to the pedestrian appeared to be significant given the mechanism of injury and trauma to the head area,” said Weishaar. “The pedestrian was stabilized by emergency crews and was immediately transported to Royal Columbian Hospital.”
Police said the motorist involved in the accident remained at the scene. The 55-year-old driver was questioned by police who also seized the vehicle for inspection.
Several witnesses have already been questioned but police asking anyone else who may have seen the crash to come forward.
The police investigation continues.
The victim’s relatives have been notified but the name of the dead woman was not released.
