Motorist’s killing was targeted, victim had no criminal past

VANCOUVER – (Update) Cliff Soumphonh Thammavongsa was shot dead while driving his car on a Vancouver east-side street in a targeted killing, city police say.Thammavongsa, 22, a resident of Metro Vancouver, was shot at while his car was going through the 1500-block of East 10th Ave on Wednesday. He was rushed to hospital but died a few minutes after arrival.
“Mr. Thammavongsa was not known to police,” said Const. Lindsey Houghton about the mysterious death.
Despite the brazen daylight shooting, there is still no word on witnesses who may have actually seen the incident.
Police continued to search for any evidence in the area and asked people to lookout for anything that my have been thrown int their yards
“Early indications are that Mr. Thammavongsa was targeted. At this time there are no suspects in custody and there are no suspect descriptions,” said Houghton.
How or from where the fatal shot was fired remains a mystery. Police have said he was alone in the car.
“911 was called and we got there, the victim was rushed to hospital where he died a short time later,” said Houghton.
“There are no suspects in custody and we have no suspect description,” he added.
‘The guy was driving alone at the time,” he said, adding that police don’t know yet whether the attacker or attackers were on foot or whether they drove by and fired at the man.
Homicide detectives are asking residents of the neighbourhood bounded by E. Broadway Avenue, E.12th Avenue, Clark Drive and Commercial Drive, to call police if they find anything suspicious in their yards. Police would be particularly interested in any weapons that might have been thrown away.
The homicide is the city’s second this year.
