Calgary car thieves cause serious accident

CALGARY – A stolen vehicle driven at high speeds tried to bypass stalled traffic and slammed into an oncoming car sending its driver to hospital with serious injuries.

The incident occurred at 7 p.m. on Saturday when two people jumped into a Ford Escape that was left running and unattended while the owner went into a store near 37 Street and Richmond Road S.W, police said.

” After stealing the Ford, they proceeded eastbound on Richmond Road at a high rate of speed. When the offenders came upon traffic congestion, they tried to pass left of center into the oncoming lanes and struck a Honda Civic being driven by a lone 55-year-old female, head-on,” said duty Insp. Rob Williams.

“The female in the Honda was transported to Hospital in serious but non-life threatening condition,” Williams added.

“A female driving the stolen Ford was taken into custody with very minor injuries. It is suspected she was intoxicated by drugs at the time,” he said. ” Her male passenger fled the scene and police continue to look for him.”

Police are continuing to investigate.
