More dads winning custody of kids during divorce
By Karen Mullins
TORONTO -With fewer stay at home moms more fathers are being awarded primary child custody when parents divorce.
According to Working Mother Magazine fathers are winning custody about 50 percent of the time when they seek primary physical custody during their divorce.
In the past women had the edge when it came to raising kids after a divorce. Judges tended to be more sympathetic to the woman in most cases, considering them the more nurturing parent.
That trend started to change as more women entered the workplace and more dads stayed home to take care of the kids.
The current economic crisis has also become a factor, women have not been hit as hard as their male counterparts. Men make up 75 percent of those who have been given the pink slip since the crisis begun.
Courts are beginning to view who really is the primary caretaker of the children pre-divorce. Those in favor of the trend think that it’s about time more fairness came into play when custody is decided.
Some are viewing the current trend of dad as the ‘winner’ in these cases as a punishment against women. They believe that working mothers are being considered less nurturing because they are out in the workplace to support their family.
