By Karen Mullins

MIDDLETOWN, CT – A thunderous explosion at a gas fired power plant under construction could be heard for miles and authorities said there are an unknown number of casualties.

The explosion took place at Kleen Energy power plant.

The Middletown Fire Department confirmed in a phone interview that they were actively working on a fire.

CNN reported at least two dead. But authorities said there could be more victims.

Middletown Police said they are still in the process of counting the injured. At least two, possibly three area hospitals are receiving the injured.

“The building is not leveled but it is missing some parts,” said police.

A receptionist at Middlesex Hospital confirmed in a phone interview that they are receiving victims from the explosion.

No further details were immediately available.
