HAMILTON, ON – A merciless thief has ripped off an 87-year-old man by pretending to be a bank manager who had to check out a theft from the senior’s account.

“The Hamilton Police Service Crimes Against Seniors Unit is warning the public about a phone scam. This after the Unit started an investigation involving an elderly man in Hamilton,” said police on Monday.

“An 87-year-old Hamilton man received a telephone call from a male posing as a bank manager. The caller stated that he was investigating an internal theft at the bank which involved the senior’s bank account,” police said.

“The senior was requested to attend his bank, withdraw $4,000.00 and he would then be met by the caller on the street. The senior did as instructed and turned over the money to a male who approached him from behind,” police said about the robbery of the helpless man.

“The Crimes Against Seniors Unit is continuing to investigate this incident but is warning the public to be aware of unscrupulous individuals that may telephone you and claim to be a bank employee or bank investigator,” cops said.

Police ask that you understand the following protocols.

• No bank or bank employee will ever ask you to participate in an investigation.
• Never give out personal bank information over the telephone.
• Never agree to withdraw large sums of cash from your account.
• Do not agree to meet with a stranger.

“If you receive a telephone call of this nature, hang up and call the Hamilton Police Service.

“Hamilton Police are asking anyone with information regarding this investigation or further questions or concerns to contact the Crimes Against Seniors Unit at 905-540-5300.”
