SQUAMISH, B.C. – (Update) Police have identified a man who was struck and killed on Highway 99 near Squamish.

Alexander Borgen Larsen, 26, of Squamish, was killed after being struck by a vehicle. Police said he was run over by a bus while lying on the road.

Police said earlier they were called at around 4:25 a.m. Sunday to a report of a person lying in the middle of the road.

“Squamish RCMP were dispatched to a call of a person laying on Highway #99 south of Depot Road,” said Cpl. Dave Ritchie.

“Two police vehicles were responding to the area and were just north of Garibaldi Way when they observed the person laying in the slow lane of Highway #99,” he said.

“At the same time a north bound Whistler Transit Bus in that lane was unable to stop or avoid a collision and subsequently ran over the person who was laying in the middle of the north bound lane,” he said.

The man was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

“Highway #99 was closed for approximately two hours and traffic was re-routed through Brackendale, B.C. on Government Road while police and the B.C. Coroner’s service, investigated on scene.”

Police did not say if they have found out why the man was lying in the middle of the road. They said the investigation continues.

I’d want his blood alcohol results before I commented on the victim; in the meantime, my sympathies to his family and a message of support to the bus driver and the folks on the bus, who must have been traumatized by the accident.
