Teen charged in death of good samaritan Sher Singh
SURREY, B.C. – Good Samaritan Sher Singh’s family can finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Singh, 54, tried to stop a man making off with shoplifted items and was punched by the suspect inside Donegal’s Liquor Barn. He fell backwards and struck his head on the floor, said Cpl. Dale Carr, spokesman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, IHIT.
“On March 1, 2009 at approximately 9:20 PM a male entered the Donegal’s Liquor Barn located at 12000 block of 96th Avenue in Surrey. The male was seen shoplifting an item and was approached by Mr. Sher SINGH who was at the store visiting associates that worked in the store,” said Carr.
“Mr. Singh attempted to stop the shoplifter by grabbing onto the male’s arm. The male suddenly turned and struck Singh in the face knocking him to the ground. The male departed the store and was seen leaving the area in a dark coloured vehicle,” he said.
Singh eventually ended up going home with a family member where he was monitored through the night, and into the next day, added Carr. But the next day, at around 2:30 p.m, a relative found him dead inside his room.
An autopsy revealed his tragic death was due to a blow to the head consistent with the hit he took.
“After a review of the security tapes in the liquor store an unknown male suspect was identified. The male identity was later confirmed as then 18-year-old Faris Omerovic of Burnaby,” Carr said.
Omerovic, who is now 19, has been charged with manslaughter.
