Biden motorcade crash injured two former U.S. gold winners

VANCOUVER -  (Update) A motorcade carrying U.S. Vice President Joe Biden was involved in a collision but  Biden was not injured, RCMP said.

Two former U.S. Olympic gold medalists riding in a car involved in the accident were hurt. They were named as ice skating gold medalist Peggy Fleming and 2002 blobsled gold winner Vonetta Flowers.

“ An investigation is underway, following a collision which involved three vehicles at the rear of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden’s motorcade,” RCMP said.

“The vehicle Vice President Biden was in was not involved and did not remain at the site of the collision. He arrived safely at his destination,” RCMP announced in what amounts to a major incident.

“At approximately 11:35 am, the rear vehicle of the group rear-ended a second vehicle,” said the statement.

“The second vehicle was then pushed into a third vehicle. Two individuals within the second (middle) vehicle sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for assessment,” said the statement by the Integrated Security Unit.

“The cause of the collision is under investigation, and a possible contributing factor includes road conditions and a reported oil spill on the roadway,” police said.

The two injured women were checked and released from hospital but the extent of their injuries in unknown. Police did not say if any of their members were hurt.
