Death car suspect in Malahat crash arrested

Police want your help to bring this man to justice. Photo was taken by B.C. Ferry terminal surveillance camera on Saturday morning.

CHEMAINUS, B.C. – (Update) Police have arrested a North Vancouver man suspected of being the car thief who allegedly caused the deaths of two people riding a motorbike on the Malahat Highway on Saturday.

A public tip led to the arrest of the suspect who was photographed when he took a stolen car from North Vancouver to Vancouver Island aboard a B.C. Ferry.

Police said they found the suspect “fairly close” to the scene where a man and a woman riding a motorcycle were killed instantly. The suspect vehicle had made a sudden turn into a rest area, cutting across the path of the two riders.

Police said he will face multiple charges of causing death, including criminal negligence and operation of a vehicle while prohibited. He is in his 20s, but police have not released his name.

A B.C. Ferry surveillance photo provided the best clue to the identity of the suspect who is alleged to have stolen a newer model Honda Accord from a North Vancouver home on Saturday before heading to Vancouver Island aboard a ferry.

The saga began in North Vancouver.

“This incident started early Saturday morning in North Vancouver when an unknown male entered a residence, stole some property and the homeowner’s car, a newer model Honda Accord, while the homeowners were home,” said Const. Mike Halskov.

“The homeowner reported the incident to North Vancouver RCMP. Later in the morning, the stolen Honda was seen going through the toll booth at Horseshoe Bay,” he said.

“The lone male suspect’s picture was captured by BC Ferries video surveillance. Police believe that the stolen Honda and suspect driver arrived at Departure Bay at approximately 10:00 a.m.,” he said.

Police were called to the Arbutus Rest Stop along the Malahat Highway (Highway 1) at about 12:25 p.m. to a report of a fatal collision.

“Police learned that the stolen Honda was travelling south and made an illegal left turn into the rest stop, cutting in front of a motorcycle which collided with the Honda, killing both the male rider and female passenger of the motorcycle,” said Halskov.

The suspect then fled the scene. An air and ground search failed to find any trace of him.

Police will not release the names of the two people killed in the tragic crash until relatives are informed.

  1. Like most things in life there are always information available and people should not be making judgments without all the information. I am sure that as time passes and more information becomes available to the news you will learn that the person accused suffers from mental illness and has been failed to be identified numerous times as a priority patient by the health care system. What is to be expected when the government and health care cannot provide adequate care for those suffering mental illness. When people are allowed to fall threw the cracks it is often others that pay the most severe price.

I do not believe that mental illness excuses the actions or make the loss any less painful but it to those that knew the accused we knew that soon enough tragedy would find him and there was nothing that anyone could do to help him or prevent this terrible event.

Eye for an eye? Death sentence? You need to have all the facts before you make such harsh statements.

My condolences to the families both to those that lost their loved ones in the crash and to the family that must watch their son stand and face the consequences of his actions once he is medicated and finally can comprehend the severity of his actions.

  2. Well said Raven Cooper!! An eye for an eye, let some bikers have this pos for a few minutes so that they can administer his sentence!
Hopefully our flawed justice system doesn’t let this loser off with a slap on the wrist. Taking a life(s) while committing another crime(s) should be a life sentence with no parole (do I hear death sentence?). I sincerely hope he gets charged on all counts and pays the max! I hope the Judge is a biker!

  3. Another point, he crossed a solid yellow line making that left turn – because of the dangers in doing so, there are no left turns allowed into the rest areas on the east side of the Malahat. Illegal left turn on top of all the other things this asshole did. We were with a group of bikers that arrived at the scene only minutes after the accident.

  4. re: “The suspect then fled the scene. An air and ground search failed to find any trace of the stolen vehicle and the suspect.” The smashed car was there – he left the scene of the accident running down the cliff towards Pat Bay.

  5. I hope this thieving, loser is caught by someone other than the police and dealt with accordingly. This guy is a disgusting waste of space and breathes the air that is well meant for someone much more deserving. Makes me ILL!
