Former Whitby church counsellor faces child sex charge
WHITBY, Ontario – A former youth counsellor at a Whitby Methodist Church has been charged with sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl.
Durham Regional Police said they were called on Saturday by the family of the girl. She told cops she had been assaulted earlier in the day at a business office after she met 52-year-old Brian Rate for lunch.
“The 52-year-old male first met the teenager two years ago while he was serving as a youth counsellor at the Whitby Free Methodist Church. They communicated back and forth on Facebook and agreed to meet for lunch one day,” said a police announcement.
“It is alleged that on March 12th, the accused met the 13-year-old for lunch. After lunch, the accused took her to his business office in Oshawa where the sexual assault allegedly took place,” cops said.
Rate, of Ashdale Crescent in Clarington is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and indecent exposure to a child. He has been held for a bail hearing.
“The investigation is ongoing and detectives with the DRPS Sexual Assault Unit want to ensure there are no other victims,” police said.
They ask anyone who may have knowledge about this or similar offences to call them.
