VANCOUVER, B.C. – (Update) A suspect who reached under the skirt of a woman and grabbed her buttocks while she was walking her dog along the seawall has been arrested.
The sexual assault occurred at around 5 p.m. on March 23 along the seawall south of the 700-block of Pacific Boulevard.
Police arrested a 29-year-old man after an alert citizen called police to report he’d seen the man’s picture released by police.
“At 6:30 a.m. yesterday morning, an anonymous caller to 9-1-1 told police that they’d seen the suspect’s photo in a newspaper and that the man was sleeping in a homeless shelter in the 300 block of E. Hastings Street,” police said.
”Police went to the shelter and arrested 29-year-old Vancouver resident James Frank Shalagan, who is known to police,” police said in a statement.
Cops had issued a public alarm over the case. The woman was molested by a man who crept up on her from behind.
” The woman turned and confronted the man and he ran away eastbound towards the Plaza of Nations,” said Const. Jana McGuinness earlier.
Police had released a surveillance photo of the suspect earlier.
Police credited extensive media coverage of the crime for the tip they received.
