Bomb squad defuses Picric Acid in Vancouver
VANCOUVER – A highly unstable and explosive chemical has been safely detonated by Vancouver Police bomb experts but cops had to shut down Pine Street from West Broadway to West 7th.
Police were called by a company that had used Picric Acid for medical analysis but had become concerned that it had aged and was potentially explosive.
“Earlier this evening the Vancouver Police were called by staff from a Vancouver company that had concerns that a small amount of a substance (Picric Acid) they had used in the past during medical analysis had aged to the point where it had possibly become unstable,” said Const. Lindsey Houghton.
“Members of the Vancouver Police Department Emergency Response Team ‘Bomb Squad’ have successfully disposed of the Picric Acid through a small contained explosion and burning off the remnants,” he said at around 11:50 p.m. on Wednesday.
Picric acid was used in artillery shells during previous wars and is a high explosive. Degradation can make it highly unstable.
