Skytrain area sex attack prompts police warning

VANCOUVER – A woman was sexually assaulted shortly after leaving the Rupert Skytrain Station and now cops want you to be careful of your surroundings.

“Vancouver Police are warning the public after a woman was sexually assaulted just before midnight last night in the 2400-block Rupert Street,” said Const. Lindsey Houghton.

“A 27-year-old Vancouver woman was approached by a man as she walked north from the Rupert Skytrain Station. The man grabbed her from behind and as the woman screamed for help, began to touch her buttocks and groin, then ran north on Rupert Street,” Houghton said.

He said the suspect was a dark-skinned, possibly middle-eastern male, 20-30 years old, 5’7” tall and about 150 pounds with a medium build. He had black short hair and was described as having a round-shaped face and wearing a light-coloured t-shirt.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the VPD Sex Crimes Unit at 604-717-2611 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Police suggest the following steps to improve personal safety:

• Stay alert and always be aware of your surroundings
• Be aware that listening to music may impair your ability to perceive what’s going on around you
• Walk in busy well-lit areas
• Arrange for someone to pick you up in a vehicle or walk with you
• Carry a cell phone in case you need to call for help.
