Mountie accused of hitting man in face with flashlight

MAPLE RIDGE, B.C. – RCMP Const. Mike Cardinal from Ridge-Meadows detachment  has been charged with striking a man in the face with his flashlight while trying to make an arrest.

He is charged with assault causing bodily harm from the incident that occurred in February 2008. But he remains on duty.

Cardinal will appear in court on June 14.

“On February 21, 2008 Const. Cardinal was one of several officers that attended a complaint of a noisy party in Maple Ridge. Const. Cardinal was attempting to arrest a male, who then allegedly resisted arrest, and the male was allegedly struck with a flashlight by Const. Cardinal, causing facial injuries,” said RCMP spokesman Sgt. Rob Vermeulen.

“The male was treated at scene by BC Ambulance and then taken to cells where he was later released.”

A separate Code of Conduct investigation was also initiated to examine Cst. Cardinal’s actions and use of force and he will be facing a disciplinary hearing.

His duty status was reviewed and he has remained on active duty since this incident.

  1. Dumb, dumb, dumb. How can you punish a police officer for doing his job? If an officer says get down on the ground, then one should get down on the ground. Resistance should be treated accordingly. If an officer has to second guess himself for his actions then that will be how people get killed.
