Football: Team B.C. gets bronze after 38-3 win

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Team BC, the British Columbia provincial under-18 football team, has won the bronze medal at the 2010 Football Canada Cup following a 38-3 win over the host team from Nova Scotia on Saturday at Raymond Field on the campus of Acadia University.

Team BC, competing at their first Football Canada Cup since 2000, concludes the 2010 tournament with an overall record of two wins and one loss.

“This bronze medal victory is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all the players, the coaching staff and the support staff,” said Team BC Head Coach Tom Kudaba following the bronze medal contest. “While we fell short of our ultimate goal of winning a gold medal, I feel our team’s performance has shown that the minor and high school football players developed in British Columbia are among the best in Canada and I believe Football BC will be able to build on our success this year in future national tournaments.”

In addition to Head Coach Tom Kudaba, members of Team BC’s staff include General Manager Larry Reda, Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach Dino Geremia, Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach Denis Kelly, Running Backs Coach Martin McDonnell, Receivers Coach Kris Pechet, Defensive Line Coach Ray Moon, Defensive Backs Coach Alexis Sanschagrin, Equipment Manager Dave Henderson, Athletic Therapist Kayla Neufeld and Assistant Trainer Darrell Ross.

On Saturday, BC managed to do something they had not been able to do in their first two games of the tournament – score early and score often.

RB Stephen Spagnuolo (Notre Dame) led the way offensively rushing for 75 yards on 12 carries and scoring two touchdowns. Spagnuolo’s first touchdown came on a two-yard run in the second quarter capping an eight-play, 91-yard drive to open up a 17-0 lead that BC carried into half-time. He added a second major score on a nine-yard run in the third quarter to finish a four-play, 35-yard drive to extend BC’s lead to 24-3.

QB Carson Williams (Abbotsford Collegiate) threw seven completions on 14 attempts for 130 yards and one touchdown – a 10-yard pass to WR Desmond Bassi (WJ Mouat) to open the scoring in the first quarter.

BC also got major scores from LB Casey Chin (New Westminster) on a 10-yard fumble recovery in the third quarter and an eight-yard run from QB Cam Bedore (WJ Mouat) in the fourth quarter. K Nick Naylor (WJ Mouat) had an 11-yard field goal in the second quarter to round out the scoring.

QB Carson Williams was named Team BC’s offensive MVP of the game while DL Johnthia Fernandez (Holy Cross) was named Team BC’s defensive MVP of the game.
