Young vandals trash Port Alberni school

PORT ALBERNI – A 13-year-old boy is among two arrested while they were trashing the AW Neill Middle School late Friday night.

Police said they were alerted to a break-in through a security alarm and arrived at the school at around 10.19 p.m. to find massive damage.

“Police observed two suspects inside the school continuing to wreak havoc on school property. The suspects attempted to flee the area but were apprehended outside the school and taken into police custody,” said Sgt. Kevin Murray.

“Initial examination of the school by staff and police found extensive damage to windows, hallways, and display cases, as well as expensive electronic and computer equipment. Paint and the contents of a fire extinguisher were expended inside a classroom, virtually destroying it. Initial estimates put the extent of the damage at over $50,000,” he said.

The two suspects, 13 and 18, are residents of Port Alberni, are to face charges of break and enter and mischief.
