GOLDEN, B.C. – In a major long-weekend tragedy, six people traveling in a min van have died following a two vehicle crash.

The horrific crash occurred when the mini van with six on board crossed the centre line and smashed into a motorhome on Trans Canada Highway 20-kilometers east of Golden.

All six were pronounced dead at the scene.

“RCMP investigators from the Golden Detachment and the Trans Canada East Traffic Services responded to a two vehicle head on collision resulting in a six person traffic a fatality on Sunday August 1st, 2010,” said Cpl. Dan Moskaluk.

“At approx 11:35 a.m. Trans Canada East Traffic Services in Golden responded to a 2 vehicle MVI on Hwy 1 approx 20 east of Golden, B.C. “Investigators including two collision reconstructionist analysts attended to examine the scene in order to assist in determining the causal factors of the crash. 1. Very tragic. Driver error no doubt as conditions were great for driving. You have to be blind not to see that construction was happening, and always marked clearly.
There has to be a better way than closing the main highway in the West, for 12 hours and inconveniencing thousands of drivers. Come on you people in charge of accident investigations, it is a wide road and you could easily open the road for one way traffic. And don’t bother trying to protect people from seeing the tragic scene, it might give them a lesson to pay attention.

  2. Fresh paving, no line painting, seems like an unsafe condition to leave the road, especially during long weekend volumes….

    • Very tragic for certain, but personal responsibility is the key to road safety. Lines do not keep people from accidents. A tough lesson to be sure…

  3. I just drove through this area last week. As you can see from the picture, they’re doing construction and they have practically non-existent lane markings and confusing detours. I truly believe this was probably a factor in this horrific and tragic accident.

  4. How horrifically tragic. My heart goes out to the family and friends of the those who perished. Prayers and thoughts go out, also, to those in the RV who are likely very traumatized and distraught. So sad all the way around :(
