Surrey man avoids roadblock, ends up smashing into building

LANGLEY, B.C. – A Langley man who evaded a counterattack roadblock got out of the fire and ended up in the frying pan instead.

After evading a police roadblock, the man smashed his car into a building and ended up in hospital.

“At approximately 2:00 a.m. (this morning) members of Langley RCMP’s Traffic Section were conducting a Counterattack in the 5600 block of 201A Street when a westbound vehicle attempted to evade the officers,” Cpl. Holly Marks said.

“The suspect vehicle, a white Ford Truck was westbound on Fraser Highway and had turned south on 201A Street. The participating officers were wearing their fluorescent yellow jackets and carrying flashlights with orange cones. They signaled for the truck to stop but instead of stopping, it accelerated, crossing over the center line and driving directly towards one of the officers. The officer was able to jump to safety.”

“One of the officers quickly got in a police vehicle and observed the suspect truck drive through a red light at 201A and 56 Avenue before accelerating through till Michaud Crescent,” she said.

“The officer had activated his emergency equipment and then observed the truck drive through a fence and crash into an apartment block near 201A Street and Michaud Crescent. The truck also struck a lamp post exposing some live electrical wires that required the attendance of Cobra Electric,” she added.

The officer immediately approached the vehicle and the driver was arrested. There were two passengers in the vehicle.

The truck sustained extensive damage and required two tow trucks to remove it from the garden near the building. A mechanical inspection has been ordered for the vehicle. Both passengers sustained minor non-life threatening injuries in the collision

The driver, 22, from Surrey, was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries and police seized blood samples for analysis to determine his level of impairment.

Police will recommend to Crown Counsel the following charges: Assault with a Weapon, Dangerous Driving, and Impaired Driving.
