Man trapped inside city garbage truck cried for help

VANCOUVER – A woman’s quick action has saved a 37-year-old man from being compacted inside a city garbage truck.

“A woman living in the 800 block of Cardero Street heard a man’s voice crying for help from the back of a passing garbage truck,” said Const. Jana McGuinness.

“She ran into the lane and stopped the driver who quickly called 9-1-1 and began unloading the compacted garbage to free the man,” said McGuinness.

The man suffered serious injuries and was admitted to hospital.

“Once out of the truck, the man was able to tell officers that he had been caught inside a dumpster when it was emptied into the back of the garbage truck near Davie and Burrard,” she said.

“Fire Department personnel and paramedics assisted the injured man. He was taken to hospital for treatment of broken bones and severe bruising,” she said.
