Flamenco: Romeo and Juliet at Surrey Arts Centre

VANCOUVER – After a successful three-show run in Vancouver, Karen Flamenco brings its newest production of “Romeo and Juliet” to the Surrey Arts Centre and Chilliwack Cultural Centre.
Set in turn of the century Mexico, the classic story of Romeo and Juliet features beautiful feuding bandidas, mystical gypsies, live flamenco guitar and singers, and narration by master storyteller and magician, Gerardo Avila. Karen Pitkethly stars as Juliet in this touring flamenco interpretation of “Romeo and Juliet” with her Karen Flamenco Company.
As one of Canada’s elite professional flamenco dancers, Karen Pitkethly is the face of flamenco in Vancouver.
This prolific dancer, choreographer, and teacher is best known for mesmerizing audiences weekly at Kino Cafe and teaching a steadily expanding group of dedicated flamenco students. Her journey as a flamenco bailora brought her to Seville, Spain thanks to a travel grant through the Canada Council. Karen has been active in Vancouver for over 10 years, dancing, teaching, and becoming a significant figure in Vancouver’s growing flamenco scene.

Two Spring shows will be performed at the Heritage Theatre in Gibsons, BC April 9th and 10th, 2011.
