Durham seniors warned against opening doors to polite thief
By Yehonathan Tommer
DURHAM – City seniors are being advised to keep their doors firmly locked and take extra precautions against opening them to strangers after numerous incidents of breaking and entry and theft were reported at homes in central Bowmanwille north of King Street in the last month.
Single female senior citizens were targeted in all these incidents which generally occurred around 7:00 pm.
The suspect would knock on their door on the pretext that he had car trouble or needed assistance. Once invited into the victim’s house, he would unsuspectingly steal cash from their purse and politely leave.
Police investigators are looking for a 30-40-year old white male, clean shaven, about 6ft. tall, of medium to large build, with short brown or black hair. He was last seen wearing a red bomber-style jacket, blue jeans or pants and white and black running shoes.
Anyone with new information to either theft incident is asked to contact D/Cst. Jason Bagg of the East Division Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1634. Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca and tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.
