Man missing in Torpy Mountain avalanche
PRINCE GEORGE, BC – One man is missing when the snowmobile he was riding was caught in an avalanche on Sunday north east of Prince George.
The missing man and a friend, both of Prince George, were riding in the Torpy Mountain Recreation area on Sunday when at about 2:00 pm an avalanche headed in their direction. One rider managed to avoid the avalanche, but his partner was caught in it.
RCMP alerted the Provincial Emergency Program which sent out a search and rescue team. The sledders were about 30 to 40 km from where they off loaded their snowmobiles. Because of the distance, weather conditions, fading daylight and the snow pack in the area, search and rescue personnel were unable to begin the search on Sunday.
At first light on Monday, police said, an avalanche expert was scheduled to fly over the scene to determine if the area is safe for a search party to begin their search for the missing man. Explosives may also have to be used to loosen unstable snow before the search can begin.
The area was reported to have had over six feet of snow. Three feet fell in the previous 24 hours before the avalanche.
Further updates will be made when information becomes available.
