Criminal negligence charged in fatal boating collision on Shuswap Lake

VANCOUVER, BC – Leon Michael Reinbrecht,49, was charged on Thursday by Chase RCMP with criminal negligence causing death and injury in a fatal boating collision on Shuswap Lake, near Magna Bay, on July 3, 2010.

Ken Brown, 53, from Anglemont died, and another eight persons were injured.

The collision occurred shortly before midnight at the end of a fireworks display in the middle of Shuswap Lake. Boats began to disperse when Reinbrecht’s 18 foot Campion “runabout” speedboat collided head on with Brown’s 40 foot houseboat.

At the time of the collision, 13 people were aboard the houseboat. Reinbrecht and two other people were aboard the speedboat.

The charges against Reinbrecht were made following an investigation into the collision by Chase RCMP, Transport Canada and BC Coroners Service.

Reinbrecht will appear for a hearing in Kamloops court on January 19th, 2012.

“We ask that current and future boat operators take the time during the off-season period to complete the required BC boat operator licensing process and to better educate themselves on safe boating practices in order to do their part in mitigating any similar tragic boating incidents in BC,” said media relations officer Cpl Dan Moskaluk.
