Fatal crash shuts down Sea to Sky Highway

VANCOUVER – A fiery accident on the Sea to Sky Highway ( Highway 99) has killed the driver of one vehicle and landed another motorist in hospital in serious condition.

Sgt. Peter Thiessen said the accident at 11.30 p.m. on Saturday near Function Junction resulted in a closure of the road.

“Lower Mainland District: On Saturday January 28, 2012 at approximately 11:30pm there was a two vehicle crash resulting in a single fatality onthe Sea to Sky Hwy# 99 in the area of Function Junction near Whistler,BC.” said Thiessen in a statement early Sunday morning.

“A car and a pick up truck collided resulting in the explosion of the car. The driver of the car is confirmed deceased. The driver of the pick up truck sustained serious injury and has been taken to a local area hospital.”

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by Whistler and Squamish RCMP along with Lower Mainland District Traffic Services, he said.

“The Sea to Sky Hwy is currently closed until further notice from Function Junction to Alice Lake.”
